M. Joy Hayes
Joy is an award-winning ethics instructor with a decade of teaching experience, both online and face-to-face classes. Joy believes the best way to learn is through practice, and the best way to motivate people to behave responsibly is by empowering them to do so. Because of this, she has developed an interactive method of teaching in which students can start applying their new found knowledge inside the classroom. When teaching professional ethics, for example, Joy has students apply the decision-making method she teaches to ethical dilemmas that arise in their own professions. She has found that when students form good habits in the presence of a teacher, they will be more equipped to continue to follow those habits once the class is over.
Joy has supervised over 50 employees at the University of Florida’s teaching center. In addition to ensuring compliance among her employees, she coached them in how to detect and respond to the unique learning styles and needs of each student and in how to facilitate learning among large groups of students.
Joy earned her Ph.D. in ethics from the University of Florida. In her dissertation, she explored the importance of ethical leadership in maintaining the values that are required for freedom to flourish. The kind of freedom we care about not only requires having many alternatives to choose from and the ability to pursue what we already value; it also requires having the capacity to understand our alternatives and to make reasoned decisions about what is worth valuing.
